Mac Selfies Go Global

Any social media and internet users by now must have noticed how big of a deal selfies have become in the past year or so (seriously, check the link).

The only way to determine
what they looked like was to take a selfie.

The deal has become even bigger after the infamous Ellen DeGeneres' selfie at the Oscars' night, with Jennifer Lawrence sitting on Meryl Streep's laps, 

and other top Hollywood celebrities like Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, and Julia Roberts giving cheesy smiles next to Ellen's phenomenal 

"I-breathe-sarcasm" facial expression. 

In the meantime, the trend has been actively followed up even by the"top VIPs" such as Pope Francis, Michelle Obama (and her dog), Prince William in a way that makes it...yes, a little too obnoxious, but also very goofy and relatable. To an extent it almost feels as if us the smart phone using modern day internet and social media users have found a method to share a global imaginary space, that makes us feel connected to each other, on the human level, somehow, no matter who we are. 

      So why not, I asked, should the same go for Macalester students who are dispersed studying abroad all over the globe, and have been living incredibly many "snapchattable" moments, be it in a desert village, or by a dreamy river fall, or a magnificent historical Roman church; road tripping; hiking; dancing, in all them far away amazing lands, that they could share with their fellow school mates?! Also, everyone who is left behind on campus is damn curious what's up with the peeps abroad!

     So here we are, officially announcing the Macalester Study Abroad Selfie contest -- all these fun submissions are from the fellow students abroad; lively captions are their bonus and they are all awaiting to be liked!

P.S The one with most likes will get a $30 Highlander Gift Shopping with an IC staff, so support your friends and add your votes to the poll!

    Selfie No. 1: On this 7-hour bus ride from Essaouira to Rabat, Morocco, two people threw up and another woman had to go to the ER.  I worked on my selfie game in response to the difficult circumstances.
